Graduation FAQ's

What do I need to do to graduate?

Answer: Students must apply to graduate using the online Graduation Application form.

Does it cost anything to graduate?

Answer: There is no graduation application fee.

Does the graduation application need to be submitted by a certain date?

Answer: Yes, there is a Graduation Application Deadline for each term. Please review our Graduation Application Deadlines. When you complete the application you will receive an email to your TCC email account and this is your acknowledgement that you applied.

Can a student who is graduating in August attend the commencement ceremony in December?

Answer: Yes. If you submitted a graduation application for summer and have completed the requirements to graduate you can participate in the December commencement.

How many guests can I invite to graduation and does each person (including children) need to have a ticket?

Answer: There is no limit to the number of guests you may invite to the graduation ceremony. We encourage you to invite as many guests as you wish to share this exciting life experience with you. No tickets are needed.

Will I receive any information about my graduation status and the commencement ceremony?

Answer: Yes. Once you submit your application for graduation an email will automatically be sent to your TCC email account confirming your application submission. A status letter will be emailed to you approximately 6-8 weeks after the application deadline. Students participating in the commencement ceremony will be sent a detailed letter informing them about ceremony related information approximately 4-6 weeks prior to the commencement ceremony as well as an email with the same information. All information pertaining to the commencement will be sent to you via your MyTCC email account.

What do I wear for graduation?

Answer: The commencement gown is thin, it is recommended that business attire be worn underneath.

Women: Dress or blouse and slacks/skirt. If you're wearing heels, be sure to try them on before the ceremony to ensure they are comfortable. You will be walking on cement floors. Low heeled or flat shoes are highly recommended.

Men: Dress shirt with slacks (tie optional) and dress shoes (i.e. no flip-flops).

When will I know if I did everything I need to do for graduation?

Answer: You can obtain a degree audit by going to your MyTCC account. If, after reviewing the degree audit, you need further assistance, please see a counselor or email graduate@tcc.edu.

What should/shouldn't I bring to the commencement ceremony?

Answer: When accepting your diploma, you will need both hands free. You will accept your diploma with your left hand and shake with your right hand simultaneously. Therefore, it is recommended that you do not carry any items with you into the ceremony (including cell phones, cameras, purses, books, etc.). Security will not be available or responsible for items left in the Student Check-In Area.

Where should I park for the commencement ceremony and will I need a parking permit?

Answer: Parking is available in the parking garages located at the corner of 43rd Street and Hampton Boulevard. Parking for physically challenged individuals is located on the first floor of the 43rd Street parking garage and the second floor of the 45th Street parking garage. There is also a drop-off location for physically challenged individuals on 45th Street. No parking permit is necessary.

Where should I stand to wait until it is time to go inside the arena?

Answer: You will be required to wait in a specific area prior to entering where the commencement will take place. Look for signs that say Student Check-In Area. Please follow the instructions of the College's Commencement Team and stay in the designated areas outside of the commencement area until instructed to enter.

What time should I arrive and how long is the ceremony?

Answer: The commencement ceremony will begin promptly at 10:00 a.m. Students are asked to arrive by 8:30 a. m. The ceremony varies in length depending on the number of graduates who participate that year. The approximate duration is typically 2 hours.

Are videos/pictures of the graduation available; if so, when and where?

Where do I tell my guests to meet me after the ceremony?

Answer: It is highly recommended that you make arrangements, prior to the ceremony, to meet with them at a specific location after the ceremony ends so that you can take additional photographs with family members if you wish.

Will I receive my diploma the day of the commencement?

Answer: No. Diplomas are mailed to students approximately 6-8 weeks after all degrees/certificates have been certified by the Office of the College Registrar. At Commencement, students will receive a diploma cover with a message from the College. If your graduation date is:

December: Your diploma will be mailed in March
May: Your diploma will be mailed in July
August: Your diploma will be mailed in October

Diplomas are printed and mailed using the diploma name and address we have listed for you in your MyTCC account. Be sure to update your information in SIS.

In the event you need to reorder a replacement diploma you may do so by completing the Request for Replacement Diploma Form. Replacement Diploma Form must include the following:

  • Your name
  • Your TCC SIS number or Social Security Number (SSN)
  • Your Date of Birth
  • Your Date of Graduation (Month and Year)
  • Mailing Address to which the replacement diploma should be delivered
  • Your signature

I received a regret letter stating my degree requirements were not met; now what?

Answer: The letter will indicate why you did not meet graduation requirements. You will need to meet with a counselor for additional assistance. Once you have met your graduation requirement(s) you will need to submit a new Graduation Application. Please see our Graduation Application Deadlines.

When do I request my final official Tidewater Community College transcript showing my date of graduation and the degree I was awarded?

Answer: You may request official transcripts at any time. However, make sure to indicate HOLD FOR DEGREE if you want your transcript to reflect your degree information. Request a Transcript »

Can I bring children to the Student Check-In Area?

Answer: Students may not bring their children to the Student Check-In Area. Be sure your children go with one of your family members or friends to the area for guests.
