Career DEVELOPMENT: ResumÉ ReFERENCES
While working on your resume, find three people who will give you a positive recommendation. When your resume is complete, talk to each reference in person and get permission to use his or her name. Once you select your references, type their names on a sheet of paper. Do not list them on your resume!
Who Should I Include as References?
- Most hiring managers want the name of your current boss - but not if the boss doesn’t know that you’re looking for another job. In that case, they’ll want the name of your previous employer.
- Other good references might include employers, professors, teachers, coaches, and prominent people who know you. Prominent people might include an attorney, a banker, a doctor, or a business executive.
- Personal acquaintances are inappropriate to use as a job reference. Clergy members and friends may be included as “character references” but their input will not be weighed very heavily. If you are a professional employee, peer colleagues may be used as references. If you have been a manager, you might include a subordinate to give a different perspective.
Most prospective employers will ask for references as they get closer to offering you a job. Listing references separately also gives you a reason to follow-up with employers in which you are particularly interested.
After each interview, call your references and prepare them to be contacted. Most employers will contact references by phone rather than by letter. If each reference has your resume on hand and notes on what to cover, he or she will make a positive impression on your behalf. Three references are adequate.
