Health Professions: Radiologic Technology Program Admission
The following steps must be completed by December 18:
- Complete a general college application for admission or apply online indicating
- Radiography as your curriculum choice and designating the
- Virginia Beach campus as your home campus.
- Meet all technical standards required for admission to the program.
- Complete the Health Professions Program Application form indicating Radiography as your

- Have official transcripts of your previous college record, or other educational experience, sent
to Office of the Registrar prior to December 18.

If your official transcripts are not received by the Office of the Registrar by the
your application will not be considered.
- Complete EARLY the on-line "Request for Evaluation of Previous Higher Educational

by the Office of the Registrar in order to evaluate your transcripts and assign transfer
credit. Verify receipt of all transcripts by calling (757) 822-1900.
If your previous college
courses were taken at TCC (any campus), this request is not needed.
* Important: Transcripts should be sent as early as possible to allow ample time for evaluation
and posting of transfer credits before the application deadline. All applicants who apply close
to deadline date must take steps to inform the program director of pending transcript
evaluation. This is especially important if you are transferring pre-requisites such as anatomy,
math or English! Otherwise, the program director will not be aware that you are qualified and
you may be overlooked for admissions.
It would be most helpful to send a copy of your
transcripts to Kim Utley in addition to the Office of the Registrar. It is the responsibility of the student to
check with counseling to determine that wavier or transfer credit has been granted by TCC.
- If required, take English and math placement tests at the college before August 1 (if possible).
Consult the Counseling Office at (757) 822-7212 to determine your need to take these
placement tests and for the dates and times they will be given.
- If placement testing determines that you need MTE 4/5 or ENG 3, these become prerequisites
which must be completed by the end of fall semester prior to admissions in January.
- If you took a developmental course at another college, it may not transfer to TCC.
Developmental courses should be taken at TCC in order to satisfy the pre-requisites.

- Upon notification of acceptance and before beginning the program, applicants must:
- Submit a medical
report indicating good general health.
- Take a two-step PPD, tuberculin skin test
- Supply immunization records.
- All program students must be certified in CPR prior to entering the clinical site
and must remain current in CPR throughout the program. CPR is not required before beginning the

Selection Process/Point System
- Likelihood of acceptance varies based on the size of the applicant pool and the quality of the applicants.
- Radiography has become a very competitive program, and enrollment is limited.
- There are no formal interviews conducted for determination of admissions.
- Admissions Session:
- All applicants are screened for minimum prerequisites in early January.
- Admission Session invitation letters sent out to qualified applicants by middle of January.
Due to the large number of qualified
applicants, only those who score highest in points are invited to attend the session.
- Admission Information Sessions held, for those who respond, in late January.
- Applicants are required to attend an Admissions Session with the Program
Faculty before being considered for the program.
- During the session, candidates' records are reviewed and
the program is outlined.
- Following the sessions in January, and letters of acceptance are mailed out by March 1.
- Students with the highest number of points are accepted first.
- 35-45 students are accepted per year (Based on community need).
- Remaining qualified students are placed on an alternate waiting list.
- Alternates are called as original acceptees decline their positions.
- Alternates are called up to and into the first week of classes in May.
- Students on the alternate list who are not accepted must submit another application the following year.
- Priority Admission Policy
- VCCS (state) policy mandates that in-state residents be accepted before out-of-state residents.
- In-state students who reside in the political subdivisions who support the college will be given priority
- The student’s jurisdiction as of December 15 will be used for admission to the Radiography program.
- Questions, complaints, or challenges to this state policy should be directed to the admissions office.
- Point System - point scale
- Points are awarded for all general education courses completed in RAD curriculum except HLT 105 (CPR).
- Course grades determine number of points.
- Grades in Anatomy & Physiology I are weighted much heavier than other courses!
- No interviews are conducted, however, applicants must attend Admissions Session to be eligible for
admission to program.

- BIO 141 and BIO 142 (Human Anatomy and Physiology I & II)
- MTH 126 (Mathematics for Allied Health)
- ENG 111 (College Composition I)
- HLT 141 or 143 (Medical Terminology)

- Social Science elective, PSY 230 (Life Span Human
Development I) or another Social Science elective
- SDV 101 (Orientation to Healthcare)
- HLT 150 (Cross Cultural Health and Wellness Practices)
Point Scale used for admissions:
- Try to complete all of the courses listed above before starting the RAD portion of the program in May
- Try to complete BIO 142 before starting the program in May.
- It is VERY difficult to take BIO 142 while enrolled in the Radiography Program!

5. Fast Track Admissions
The standard admissions track provides the majority of students with the best route to successful completion of the radiography program. The fast track option provides a means for select scholars to gain accelerated admission; students capable of carrying a 16-18 hour credit load once they are admitted to the program.
To be qualified for fast track, students must place into Math 158 (or higher) and English 111 in the assessment testing process or have recent qualifying SAT/ACT scores. Alternatively, a student with a grade of “A” in English 111 and Math 158 (or higher) with no prior attempts or remedial courses will qualify. Students with any college course grades below a B will not be considered for fast track. In addition students must earn an “A” in Human Anatomy and Physiology (BIO 141) on the first attempt and complete the Healthcare experience component by the December application deadline. All requirements must have been completed within the last 5 years.
6. Healthcare Experience
Applicants who have healthcare experience may earn up to six points towards admission to the Radiography Program. Documentation of such experience should be submitted to the Program Director by the second Friday in January following the December 18th application. The documentation may be sent electronically or as a hard copy, and should be accurate, well presented and verifiable. Points will be awarded based on the following criteria:
- Number of hours performed (100 hours are required to receive maximum points)
- Involves direct patient care
- Radiology related
- Obtained certification
- Recent (within the last 5 years)
A committee of program faculty and student advisors will award points based on these criteria.
To ensure patient safety and welfare, the TCC Radiography Program has
established the following qualifications that must be met by the students admitted to or enrolled in the program:
- Sufficient eyesight to observe patients, manipulate equipment and accessories, visually monitor
patients in dimmed light via video monitors, and evaluate radiographs for quality.
- Sufficient hearing to communicate with patients and other members of the health care team,
monitor patients via audio monitors, and hear background sounds during equipment operations.
- Satisfactory verbal, reading, and written skills to effectively and promptly communicate in
- Sufficient gross and fine motor coordination to manipulate equipment and accessories, lift a
minimum of 35 pounds, and to stoop, bend or promptly assist patients who become unstable.
- Satisfactory physical strength and endurance to move immobile patients to or from a stretcher or
wheelchair to the x-ray table, work with arms extended overhead, carry 20-25 pounds while
walking, and stand in place for long periods of time.
- Satisfactory intellectual and emotional functions to ensure patient safety and exercise independent
judgment and discretion in the performance of assigned responsibilities.
Program Pregnancy Policy
Prospective students are advised that due to increased radiosensitivity of the human fetus, a pregnancy
policy has been established to reduce the potential risk of overexposure to the unborn child.
In the event of pregnancy while enrolled in the Radiography program, the student has the option of whether or not to inform the program officials of the pregnancy.
Once the pregnancy has been declared in writing to program officials, the student will choose from
the following two options:
- Withdrawal in good standing, which will allow re-admission to the program after delivery
(according to the program Re-admission Policy).
- Continuation in the program under the following circumstances:
- Physician's approval.
- The student must sign a form releasing the college and its affiliates of any liability
associated with fetal damage.
- Schedule Modification:
- The student will be rotated out of the high radiation areas while pregnant which
may delay graduation.
- or -
- The student may choose to complete all rotations with approval of their physician.
Close radiation monitoring will be followed to ensure that radiation exposure limits
to the fetus are not exceeded.
Students have the right at any time to Un-declare a previously declared pregnancy. The un-declaration must be provided in writing to program officials.
