John Lee: Stopping & Starting
September 3 – November 3, 2016
Opening Reception: Thursday, September 8, 7 p.m.
A gallery talk will precede the Opening Reception at 6:30 p.m.

Finding inspiration from the world around him, second-generation painter John Lee (Williamsburg, VA) is able to find something interesting in the drabbest of places. In this solo exhibition, Lee recreates his perceptions into luminous, colorful, and expressive interiors, still lifes, and portraits that possess rhythmic compositions, interesting color relationships, and various light sources.


47th Annual TCC Art Faculty Exhibition
November 19, 2016 – January 5, 2017
Opening Reception: Friday, November 18, 6 p.m.

The annual student art sale will take place during the event from 5 – 8 p.m.

Visual Arts Center full-time and adjunct faculty present a diversity of art media including glass, pottery, photography, painting, drawing, computer generated work and mixed media. Artwork will include equally varied styles and approaches.


Multiple Abstractions
January 21 – March 2, 2017
Opening Reception: Thursday, January 26, 7 p.m.
A gallery talk will precede the Opening Reception at 6:30 p.m.

Through their abstract creations, Sally Bowring (Richmond, VA) and Eloise Shelton-Mayo (Virginia Beach, VA) explore process driven compositions and personal meaning. Bowring’s large-scale paintings are inspired, in part, by the gardens in Manhattan’s Cloisters. Shelton-Mayo focuses on themes of transition, memory, and home in her oil and cold wax pieces. Complementary glass vessels by Julie Larkin (Virginia Beach, VA) will be on view in the exhibit cases. All three women create work that is both geometric and organic.


46th Annual Student Art & Design Exhibition
March 25 – April 23, 2017
Awards Presentation/Opening Reception • Saturday, April 1, 11 a.m. • Commodore Theatre

A year’s work culminates with a student show chosen from completed VAC course projects. Featuring over 200 pieces

by more than 100 students, works represent program courses in Studio Arts, Photography, Graphic Design, Ceramics and Glassblowing. Awards recognizing artistic excellence will be distributed at the awards presentation.

Breaking Barriers: Glass Work by TCC Grads and Chrysler Assistants
May 6 – June 21, 2017
Atist's Brunch: Sunday, June 4, 11 a.m.

This exhibition takes place during the Glass Art Society’s (GAS) annual conference hosted by the Chrysler Museum and thematically titled, Reflections from the Edge: Glass Art & Performance. In this collaboration with regional venues, the VAC presents works by TCC graduates and Chrysler Museum glass studio assistants that are highly varied and depict current trends in this popular medium. Joint festivities take place on June 4 with the adjacent Portsmouth Art and Cultural Center.


Heated Exchange
July 8 – August 30, 2017

A gallery talk will precede the Opening Reception at 6:30 p.m.

In this group exhibition, ten artists use distinct approaches to the seductive surface, luminous color, and ethereal image layering unique to the encaustic medium. Incorporating scraping, burning, burnishing, incising, dipping, dyeing, or pouring, works are infused with poetic beauty and release the fragrant scent of honeyed beeswax. This hot wax technique
is recognized for its exquisite beauty and incredible versatility.
